Cornflower & Cream Trailing Floral Cotton Dress Fabric

Cream flowers and slender leaves trail over a soft cornflower blue ground in a loose, hand-drawn arrangement. The negative space between the sprigs stops it feeling crowded, so it reads as calm rather than busy.

It is printed on a lightweight summer-weight cotton, 60 inches (roughly 152cm) wide, which is broad enough that most dress bodices and skirt panels cut from a single width with very little waste. The cloth has a dry, crisp handle straight off the roll and softens noticeably after the first wash.

What to make with it: A good match for shirt dresses, pyjama sets, blouses and lightweight summer trousers.

The 60-inch width is the main practical reason to buy cotton here rather than from a high-street haberdashery. Most printed cottons in the UK are sold at 44 inches, which means an extra half metre or more on a full skirt; at this width you usually cut the same garment from noticeably less cloth.
