Needlecord Corduroy Fabric
A soft fine wale corduroy with a close, even rib and a brushed velvety surface. Available in seven colours: black, navy, sage green, silver grey, camel, cream and blush pink. The rib is fine enough to read as texture rather than stripe, so it works on fitted pieces where a chunky cord would be too heavy.
60 inches (approx. 152cm) wide, which is considerably wider than most corduroy sold in UK shops. It has body without stiffness and holds a pressed crease well.
What to make with it: Pinafore dresses, trousers, skirts, shirts, jackets and children's clothing. Needlecord is the classic autumn and winter dressmaking cloth and it suits simple shapes where the texture does the work.
Cut it all one way. Corduroy has a nap like velvet. Run your hand along the rib and it feels smooth one way and rough the other, and the colour looks different depending on which way the pile lies. Every pattern piece must be cut facing the same direction. Cutting with the pile running upwards gives a richer, deeper colour; downwards gives a smoother, lighter one. Pick one and stick to it across the whole garment.
Fabric: Needlecord corduroy, fine wale
Width: 60 inches / approx. 152cm
Colours: 7 available
Sold by: the metre, cut as one continuous length
Sewing corduroy: Use a size 80 or 90 needle and a slightly longer stitch. Press on the reverse over a towel so the ribs do not flatten. Shake or brush the cut pieces before sewing, because cord sheds a surprising amount of lint when it is cut.
Care: Wash cool inside out and tumble dry low or hang to dry. Do not iron directly on the face.
