Navy Rose Viscose
Full blown roses and peonies in rose pink and cream, with small butter yellow blooms scattered between them, all set against a deep navy ground. The foliage is a fresh mid green rather than the muted sages you usually see on a dark floral, and that is what keeps the whole print looking alive instead of heavy.
Navy and pink is the pairing that never stops selling. It has been in and out of every fabric shop for fifty years and it still looks right, which makes it a safe cut if you are making something you want to wear for a long time.
The dark ground does the same job here as black does. It holds the colours up, hides marks, and works for modest wear, but navy sits softer against the face than black and is easier to wear in daylight.
It also crosses seasons. The fresh greens and pinks read like spring even though the depth of the navy suits winter, so this is one you can cut into in either half of the year.
This is a viscose, so it is cool against the skin, soft to handle, and it drapes close to the body rather than standing away from it. It gathers without bulking at the seams.
60 inches wide, sold in metres and cut as one continuous length. Order three metres and it arrives as a single three metre piece, not three separate cuts.
What to make with it: Maxi and midi dresses, blouses, abayas, kameez and shalwar, tiered and gathered skirts, wide leg trousers, kimono jackets, dupattas.
Before you cut: Pre-wash, because viscose shrinks on its first wash and you want that happening before the pieces are cut. Wash cool, hang to dry, and expect it back slightly narrower. The roses are large and spaced, so lay your pieces out and check where the biggest blooms land, particularly on the bust and the seat. Cut single layer with pattern weights or plenty of pins. The cut edges fray, so overlock or zigzag your seam allowances early. Use a fine needle, and mark with a white or silver pencil, since chalk is hard to see on a dark ground.
Care: Machine wash cool on a delicate cycle, hang to dry, never tumble dry and never wring it. Press on a medium heat while slightly damp.
