Mushroom Bloom Viscose

Cream peonies with gold centres, soft blush blooms and deep cornflower blue flowers, trailing on sage green stems across a warm taupe ground. A paler floral sits tonally in the ground behind them, barely visible, which stops the open areas looking flat.

The ground colour is the reason to buy it. Floral fabric comes on cream, white, black, navy or sage, and very little else. A warm mushroom taupe is unusual, and it is a far easier neutral to wear than white or cream, since it does not wash anyone out and it does not show every mark.

The navy flowers are doing the work. Without them the whole print would sit in one soft tonal range and lose its definition. They give it something to anchor to, and they open up navy trimmings and accessories alongside the obvious cream and blush.

This is a viscose, so it is cool against the skin, soft to handle, and it drapes close to the body rather than standing away from it. It gathers without bulking at the seams.

60 inches wide, sold in metres and cut as one continuous length. Order three metres and it arrives as a single three metre piece, not three separate cuts.

What to make with it: Maxi and midi dresses, blouses, abayas, kameez and shalwar, tiered and gathered skirts, wide leg trousers, kimono jackets, dupattas.

This one has a direction, so read before you cut. The blooms sit upright on stems that trail downward, so every pattern piece has to be cut facing the same way. You cannot turn pieces around to save cloth, and an upside down peony is obvious once the garment is made. Allow a little more than your pattern states to account for it.

Before you cut: Pre-wash, because viscose shrinks on its first wash and you want that happening before the pieces are cut. Wash cool, hang to dry, and expect it back slightly narrower. Cut single layer with pattern weights or plenty of pins. The cut edges fray, so overlock or zigzag your seam allowances early, and use a fine needle.

Care: Machine wash cool on a delicate cycle, hang to dry, never tumble dry and never wring it. Press on a medium heat while slightly damp.
