Indigo & Crimson Block Print Moss Crepe
A dense all-over floral in crimson, coral and soft peach on an indigo blue ground, drawn in the style of a traditional Indian block print. There are two scales working at once: a fine ditsy of tiny flowers and dots covering the whole ground, with larger paisley-shaped clusters of leaves sitting over the top. The effect is deep and layered, closer to an antique printed cotton than a modern floral.
This is a moss crepe, a thicker crepe with a fine pebbled grain woven into the surface. It feels slightly rough to the hand rather than smooth, has body and holds its shape, and there is no stretch in it. 60 inches (approx. 152cm) wide. A proper winter weight, warmer and more substantial than our cottons and viscose.
What to make with it: Shalwar kameez, winter dresses, wide-leg trousers, tunics, skirts and scarves. A print this busy is the most forgiving thing you can sew. It hides seams, hides creasing, and hides the odd mistake, which makes it a good choice for a first project in a new pattern.
The reason to choose crepe: the pebbled weave resists creasing. It comes out of a suitcase or a long car journey looking like you have just put it on, which is why crepe is the traditional choice for travel and for anything worn through a full day. It also means less time at the ironing board than a cotton of the same weight.
Easy to cut. Unlike our velvets, moss crepe has no nap. The colour looks the same whichever way round you hold it, so you can lay pattern pieces in either direction and use your cloth efficiently. The print is dense enough that nothing needs lining up across a seam.

Sewing moss crepe: A straightforward fabric to work with. Use a size 80 universal needle, press firmly with steam, and it behaves itself under the machine. The texture grips rather than slips, which makes it a good choice if you have struggled with viscose or satin.
Care: Wash cool on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. A cool iron if needed, though you will rarely need one.
